Remove Default Windows Applications

So you never use Internet Explorer, and the thought of using Windows Media Player never occurred to you. And lets not even think about using Windows Messenger.. Who ever uses Windows Messenger? But just because you don’t use those apps, doesn’t mean they’re not still on your system. However, you can completely disable them using windows “Uninstall Windows Components” feature. Something that’s overlooked rather frequently. Simply pop open your control panel and click on Add and Remove Programs.

Now, click on Add and Remove Windows Components. For some reason, most people never seem to take a look at this section, only really paying attention to the default window that is displayed.

After a few seconds of waiting, you should see the Windows Component Wizard. Simply uncheck whatever you don’t need (make sure you know what you’re doing.. or at least google an option before you disable it) and then click next. Windows will remove the components that you selected. Keep in mind, however, that you will still be able to re-enable them all, so it doesn’t actually uninstall them and free up any room. It just disables them.

Hopefully the little tip was helpful for those of you trying to get rid of the default Windows apps that show up!

Actually you can remove exploder through that dialogue. Because of the whole Anti-trust suits, Microsoft was forced to include it :)

AFAIK, you can only remove the Start Menu exploder shortcut, not the actual app itself. That suit was only in the EU, and so they released Windows XP “N” or something like that (or was it Windows Media player that spawned that whole thing. I can’t remember)

You can remove exploder with nLite, from what I’ve been told. You don’t seem to have any ads on your site that i can click on ;-)

Yep that’s right, it’s strange that it lets you “uninstall” it but really all it does is remove a link to the program. And yea, the suit was only in the EU and it was spawned by WMP, which cause Microsoft to release a version of windows without it if I remember correctly.

And yep to the ad’s.. I’m trying to keep it ad free until I find things that I can actually support :P Maybe you’ll see firefox/googlechrome ads up one day:P
